Swallowing: signs that need a closer look
Swallowing safely takes split-second teamwork between the lips, tongue, throat and breathing. When that teamwork is off, food or drink can go the wrong way, eating can take a long time, or children may avoid certain foods. Swallowing difficulty is called dysphagia, and speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat it.
