Myofunctional therapy for kids and teens

Pediatric orofacial myofunctional therapy for mouth breathing, tongue thrust, low tongue posture, oral habits and tongue tie care, serving Celina, Little Elm, Anna and surrounding Collin and Denton County communities.

By Meagan Dungan, M.S., CCC-SLP · Parent Education

Orofacial myofunctional therapy retrains how the muscles of the face, lips, tongue and jaw work at rest and during breathing, chewing and swallowing. The goals are simple: lips closed at rest, the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, breathing through the nose and a healthy swallow.

These patterns support sleep, dental and facial growth, eating and speech. NTX provides myofunctional therapy for infants, children and teens, combined with feeding therapy when eating is part of the picture.

Signs your child may benefit

  • Mouth breathing during the day or at night
  • Snoring or restless sleep
  • Lips apart at rest
  • Tongue thrust or tongue pushing forward when swallowing
  • Low or forward tongue resting posture
  • Thumb sucking or pacifier use that is hard to stop
  • Messy or open-mouth chewing
  • A suspected or diagnosed tongue or lip tie

What we work on

Nasal breathing

Building the habit of breathing through the nose with lips closed.

Tongue posture

Teaching the tongue to rest on the palate, where it supports growth and a healthy swallow.

Mature swallow

Replacing a tongue thrust with a swallow that keeps the tongue inside the teeth.

Oral habits

Gentle, positive plans to move past thumb, finger and pacifier habits.

Tongue tie care

Therapy before and after frenectomy, coordinated with your release provider.

Chewing and eating

Lip closure, chewing and bolus control so meals are easier.

Mouth taping is not a fix

Taping the lips does not lift the tongue or restore the oral seal. The lasting fix is to check the airway with your child's medical team and retrain tongue posture, lip seal and nasal breathing. Read why mouth breathing matters.

A team approach

Myofunctional concerns often involve the airway, teeth and jaw. With your permission, we coordinate with pediatricians, ENTs, allergists, pediatric dentists, orthodontists and release providers. We serve families in Celina, Little Elm, Anna and surrounding Collin and Denton County communities, with virtual consults available for families farther away.

Next step

Is your child breathing through their mouth?

A feeding and myofunctional evaluation looks at breathing, tongue posture, lip seal, swallowing and eating together, so the plan addresses the real cause.
