A step-by-step myofunctional therapy protocol for children about 2 and older with tethered oral tissues, from the first pre-release session to discharge. You get all 3 kid-friendly editions.

Strength and coordination come before a release; the release only adds range of motion. This protocol builds that foundation first, protects the release week, retrains function after it and carries skills into meals, speech and sleep. Built by Meagan Dungan, M.S., CCC-SLP, drawing on ASHA guidance and published research on myofunctional therapy and tethered oral tissues.

Three editions, one protocol

  • Comet's Star Mission: a space theme for younger children.
  • Captain Tip's Hero Academy: a superhero theme.
  • Star Explorer: plain names and Bronze to Platinum ranks for older kids.

The clinical content, exercise numbers and doses are the same in every edition, so you can pick the one that fits each child.

What's inside each edition (74 pages)

  • Foundations: why strength comes first, the evidence, the team and your scope, rest posture and airway, dissociation of the tongue from the jaw and the floor of the mouth, the swallow (mature, reverse and tongue base retraction) and motor learning rules
  • Session 0 prep day: a themed mission briefing, a face-part treasure hunt, copycat faces, Mouth Says and the Quiet Game, so children learn the names, imitation and following directions before the first exercise
  • 4 phases: Build (pre-release), Protect (release week), Retrain and Integrate, with goals, session plans and criteria to move on
  • 14 progressive exercises, each building on the last, with levels, reps, what to watch for, data to take and dose by phase: finding the spot; spot, teeth, lips sequencing; tongue clicks; spot, suck and hold; lip seal; lateralization; elevation; floor-free tongue lift; relaxed jaw; nasal breathing; rest posture; mature swallow; lateral chewing; and alveolar sounds
  • A game for every exercise, like Cheerio Lift, Cotton Ball Races and the Quiet Game, plus a game bank by skill with a supply list and safety notes
  • A session-by-session map with the daily home program and the games to play at every session
  • Release readiness checklist, release provider handoff and post-release plan to discharge
  • Sleep and airway: snoring, open-mouth posture and tongue placement, with a family sleep check
  • Therapist tools: data sheet, session plan, troubleshooting and sample goals
  • Family pages, a Find It face map, kid home exercise cards with a game on each, sticker charts and a completion certificate
